The Nepalese Society of Spectroscopy and Microscopy (NSSM) was established with a vision to address the challenges and unlock the potential of advanced microscopy and spectroscopy in Nepal. Despite having valuable assets like the Transmission Electron Microscope at Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital and a Scanning Electron Microscope at NARC, their lack of utilization due to the absence of technical expertise highlights the dire need for collaboration, training, and awareness in this field. Recognizing this gap, NSSM has been actively working to elevate Nepal’s scientific capabilities, beginning with its inception as the Nepalese Society of Microscopy in 2018.
Over the years, NSSM has participated in prestigious international conferences and workshops, presenting groundbreaking research and fostering connections with microscopy societies worldwide. These engagements have not only broadened our network but also emphasized the complementary role of spectroscopy alongside microscopy, leading to the society’s recent renaming to NSSM.
Our efforts extend beyond advocacy and networking. NSSM played a pivotal role in supporting the “1% GDP for R&D” movement led by the National Innovation Center (NIC), culminating in a government allocation of 100 crores for research and development in 2024. We are proud that a significant portion of this fund is earmarked for establishing a Central Laboratory at Tribhuvan University. This facility, equipped with state-of-the-art spectroscopic and microscopic instruments, promises to revolutionize Nepal’s research landscape.
As NSSM continues its journey, our commitment remains steadfast: to nurture a culture of scientific innovation, collaboration, and excellence in Nepal. We invite scientists, researchers, and enthusiasts to join us in shaping a brighter future where advanced microscopy and spectroscopy empower groundbreaking discoveries for the nation and beyond.
